What to see at Bahrain Fort

What to see at Bahrain Fort

Bahrain Fort brings together archaeological remains from residential, public, commercial and military life. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities describes the site as the former capital of Dilmun.

The archaeological mound covers 17.5 hectares, with more than 4,000 years of occupation. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005, a recognition of its archaeological significance.

Excavations have revealed structures from several periods, so the remains are not limited to a single fortification. The outdoor site and museum offer different ways to understand what archaeologists have uncovered.

Qal'at al-Bahrain Museum presents the site’s history through five galleries arranged chronologically across five historical periods. It opened on 18 February 2008 and has more than 500 artefacts.

The museum has a two-floor design, with a courtyard leading to a café, a lecture hall and a gift shop. To add context before walking the archaeological site, start with the galleries and then collect a free trilingual audio guide from the museum information desk.

The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities offers free guided tours and advises booking in advance. The audio guide is another way to follow the site’s history as you walk.
